The right portable smoke eater needs to have carbon filtration to handle odors, accompanied by either electrostatic or media filtration for the particles.  Media filters, similar to those in your HVAC system, are composed of fibers woven together (cloth-like or paper) and may also be made of hospital grade HEPA paper.
