Electrostatic Smoke Eaters have filters that have alternately charged metal plates (one is charged positively alternating with a negatively charged plate, etc...). They attract even the smallest smoke particles and pollutants from the air similar to how a magnet attracts metal shards. Another bonus is that these filters rarely need to be replaced, if ever. They only need to be washed and then reused! However, most people confuse you by saying this is all you need to clean the smoke from the air. Not true! It is important to have a prefilter of some kind, usually a media type filter. A media filter is woven fabric or paper that traps larger particles and smoke from the air, along with hair, pollen, and other common airborne dander. This way only the smallest particles get through to be trapped by the electrostatic filter. Just as importantly, a post filter is used to absorb the smoke smell. This filter is made of carbon, usually pounds of it so it doesn't have to be replaced very often. Activated carbon filters suck up smoke like a sponge and are the most effective in removing just the odor of smoke.
